(from wtae.com)Bill Cowher nominated in first year of eligibility.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher is among the first-time candidates for the 2012 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Two of Cowher's former players, running back Jerome Bettis and center Dermontti Dawson, are eligible for the second and seventh times, respectively.
Other former Pittsburgh players and coaches on the list are Gary Anderson, Kevin Greene, Bud Carson, Buddy Parker and Donnie Shell. They have all been eligible on previous occasions.
Before 2008, coaches were eligible immediately upon retirement, which allowed Parcells and Schottenheimer to be nominees on prior occasions. This is their first year of eligibility under a new provision that makes it mandatory for coaches -- like players -- to be retired five years.
